About Me
Hi, I’m Starla
I’m Starla McCreary, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist offering telehealth therapy to adults throughout California. I’m originally from Ohio, have lived on the East Coast, and have made my home in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 20 years.
I’ve been doing this work in one form or another since 2001. Before becoming a therapist, I worked in foster care, HIV prevention, and community-based programs across the East Coast and the Bay Area.
The work that shaped me
For twelve years, I was a case manager and therapist at UCSF Citywide in San Francisco, working with adults navigating some of the most complex and painful circumstances people can face.
I’ve done this work in the many places people actually live their lives, in homes, on the street, and in clinics. I’ve seen how much gets carried, and how the ways we learn to survive often make sense, even when they’re causing us pain. Change, when it happens, often comes through relationship, honesty, and moments of real connection. It sometimes comes in ways that are quieter or more unexpected than people imagine.
I became a licensed LMFT in 2016 and began seeing clients in private practice in 2024. This chapter of my work gives me the chance to offer something quieter, deeper, and more spacious than what large systems typically allow.
What I believe
Outside of the therapy room, I’m a feminist and a dancer. I believe in the body’s capacity to hold and release what words sometimes can’t reach.
I’m committed to therapy that is culturally grounded, politically aware, and genuinely human. I don’t believe in perfect. I believe in something more honest. I believe in something that’s warm, human, and real.
If that sounds like the kind of space you’re looking for, I’d love to connect.
